An Alternative to Clearbore – How to Choose the Best Bore Cleaner

Whilst iron bacteria pose no risks to our health and well-being, it can build up and compromise the effectivity of equipment if left untreated or if treated incorrectly. Eventually, this can lead to breakdowns, resulting in expensive repair and maintenance.
Farmers have traditionally employed shock chlorination as a way to deal with iron bacteria. This involves soaking the affected equipment in a high amount of chlorine for an extended period of time, typically 12 hours or longer. Chlorine is a powerful disinfectant, killing harmful germs that can make people sick, such as the norovirus (aka the stomach “bug”) and seasonal flu when used properly.
The method has proven effective for killing bacteria in pipes, water treatment equipment, and plumbing fixtures; however, it doesn’t take long for the bacteria to come back. These days, chlorine is not the only option available to farmers who want to get rid of iron bacteria. Alternatives such as Triple7 Envirobore and Clearbore exist, but it is a matter of choosing the best product for you, your workers, your equipment and the environment.
The Best Bore Cleaning Product
Both Triple7 Envirobore and Clearbore are effective when it comes to removing iron bacteria from water bores and pipes. On the surface, the products may seem similar – they are both Australian-made, efficient bore cleaners, but that is where the similarities end.
For example, unlike Clearbore, Triple7 Envirobore is readily-biodegradable to Australian Standard 4351, which means the organic surfactants in the product are proven to degrade by 70 percent or more within 28 days. It contains no toxic, hazardous or corrosive ingredients, making it safe to use, store, and dispose of.
Whilst Clearbore may be a common bore cleaning product that has been used by farmers across Australia for many years, it is not necessarily the best one out there. Making the Right Choice
Aside from the efficacy of a product, there are other factors to consider when choosing the right bore cleaner.
- Is it hazardous? – Hazardous chemicals are defined as any chemicals that can cause physical or health hazards. Make sure that the product you choose does not contain toxic ingredients such as petroleum products, glycol ethers, terpenes, and volatile organic compounds or VOCs, among many others. It’s also important to find out if the product is flammable, combustible, or explosive.
- Is it corrosive? – The product should not contain any strong corrosive acids such as oxalic, hydrochloric, phosphoric, or sulphuric acids that can potentially compromise your equipment.
- Is it readily-biodegradable? – Many companies use the term ‘biodegradable’ to describe their products as being ‘green’. However, when used by itself, the term doesn’t mean anything significant at all.
